A Revolut co-founder has changed his name at Companies House ahead of the introduction of new identity verification rules.

Nik Storonsky has changed the spelling of his official name as director of Revolut to Nik Storonskiy, according to company filings, in a move seen as aligning the spelling with its appearance on other official identification documents.

The move adds the Revolut boss to the more than one million company directors who have verified their identities with Companies House ahead of rule changes due to come into force on Tuesday.

Under regulations introduced by the UK’s Economic Crime and Company Transparency Act, all new and existing company directors and persons with significant control (PSCs) will need to verify their identity at Companies House.

Verification due dates will vary for different directors and PSCs, Companies House said.

What is the meaning of a name?

The law, which received Royal Assent in October 2023, aims to make data at Companies House more reliable and transparent and stop the creation of fraudulent businesses.

Companies House chief executive Andy King said: “One million verified identities is a significant milestone, but it is just the beginning.

“Identity verification will help ensure that the people who establish, run and control companies are who they say they are.

“This will make our data more reliable and less prone to misuse, supporting a more transparent and trusted business environment.”

Storonskiy was born and raised in Russia before moving to London in 2006 to work at Lehman Brothers as a derivatives trader. He founded Revolut in 2013 with Ukrainian businessman Vlad Yatsenko. He renounced his Russian citizenship following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Last month Storonskiy switched his official residence from the UK to the United Arab Emirates, amid a wave of high-profile businesspeople moving their residences abroad following the removal of Britain’s non-dominant regime.
