Kemi Badenoch has warned that Andy Burnham will saddle the UK with a “Burnham premium” on mortgages and borrowing costs as Labour’s leadership crisis continues following the mayor’s planned return to Westminster.
The Conservative leader capitalized on growing speculation around Burnham’s ambitions after the Makerfield by-election became the latest flashpoint in Labour’s escalating civil war.
Speaking to Sky News, Badenoch argued that Burnham’s popularity rests on the fact that she “doesn’t have to do anything”, and added that governing nationally would expose Labor’s divisions on borrowing, tax and public spending.
“Politics is about making difficult decisions,” he said. “It’s going to impact everyone’s mortgages; it’s going to impact this country’s borrowing costs. It’s going to cost billions in interest on debt – you’re going to pay the Burnham premium.”
The accusations are the clearest attempt ever by the Conservative Party to portray Labor’s chaotic leadership as an economic risk at a time when other countries remain sensitive to higher borrowing levels and political instability.
Burnham increasingly acted as a supporter of the left wing of the Labor Party, supporting greater public control of utilities, and what he described as “reindustrialization” to address Britain’s long-term economic stagnation.
“The problem is not just Keir Starmer, it is everyone,” he told Times Radio. “And it doesn’t matter if it’s Andy Burnham or Wes Streeting.”
His comments come as Labor MPs and ministers privately debate whether Starmer can survive if Burnham wins the Makerfield contest, with some cabinet ministers reportedly discussing whether the prime minister should set a timetable for his departure rather than risk being paralyzed for months.
Labor leadership crisis worries markets
The growing uncertainty within the government comes as businesses warn that Britain will not be able to afford prolonged political instability after years of weak growth and high borrowing costs.
Burnham’s allies argue that her economic platform reflects growing frustration with Britain’s housing crisis, stagnant wages and poor public services.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, Burnham called for “stronger public control over life’s necessities”, including energy, water, transport and housing.
But Badenoch argues that Labour’s leadership race risks dragging the party further away from fiscal discipline and reopening damaging arguments over Brexit and public spending.
He also criticized attempts by senior Labor figures to review Britain’s relationship with the European Union, saying the country should focus on “doing the best it can by leaving the EU” rather than reigniting old divisions.
The Conservative Party has increasingly sought to present Labor’s internal tensions as evidence that the government’s attention is turning away from the economy as pressure on tax, public finances and growth increases.
Badenoch also rejected the prospect of a Labor leadership election as a solution to the country’s problems.
“A leadership contest is not what this country needs,” he told Times Radio, arguing that “no party” other than the Conservatives offers a serious long-term economic agenda.
PakarPBN
A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.
In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.
The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
