A new website called Is My Pub Fucked (ismypubfucked.com) has been created to identify the most at-risk pubs in the country, and rank them according to how “fucked” they are.
This website uses official data from the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to identify which pubs are most affected by the proposed business rates rises facing pubs in England. The result was a list of companies facing the biggest increases, with companies expected to see increases of more than 200 percent categorized as “completely screwed.”
The website was designed by Ben Guerin, co-founder of digital creative agency Topham Guerin. He said he created the website as a big fan of British pubs and wanted a way to find out which ones most needed his support.
There may be some respite for these pubs, as the government is expected to change the way business rates are calculated, making bill increases smaller. But Is My Pub is Fucked Up states that rates are “just one pressure” on the hospitality industry, with rising wages, higher national insurance, rising alcohol charges, soaring energy costs and falling customer spending all contributing to the disaster.
“This tool is here to highlight the challenges pubs face – and help you find nearby pubs that need your support,” said Guerin.
The most “chaotic” pub in the country is the Victoria Inn in Gloucester, which is facing a potential rate increase of 673 per cent, equivalent to a £25,000 increase. Next is the Berkeley Arms, also in Gloucester, with an extra £14,000 meaning a rise of 933 per cent, then The Den in Bristol, with an extra £22,700 meaning a rise of 473 per cent.
The biggest percentage increase was at The Bertie Arms in Stamford outside Peterborough, where a rate increase of £43,750 equated to a rise of 1,944 per cent, according to ismypubfucked.com.
The biggest monetary increase is The Longwall in Oxford, whose price could skyrocket by £630,000, or an increase of 94 per cent. The Premier Inn and Beafeater Grill in Dartford saw an increase of £546,000.
The “most chaotic pub” in the capital is the Spread Eagle in Wandsworth, facing a rise of £104,000 *+622 per cent). The Beaten Docket in Cricklewood, North West London came second in London with a “completely chaotic” rating – its rates could rise by £138,000 or 431 per cent. It is followed by the Dog and Bell in Deptford which is in 40th place on the overall leaderboard with a potential increase of £74,000 equating to a 426 per cent increase. Fourth is the Wickham Arms in Brockley at number 45 with a rise of £37,250 (+425 per cent).
The list can be displayed in the form of a heat map, with green representing “good”, yellow “feeling it”, orange “struggling”, red “chaotic” and the red line in the black circle meaning “really messed up”, with an increase rate of over 200%.
