Last year, after four decades of closure, iconic Port Ellen distillation opened the door on time for the 1200th birthday. And to celebrate it, the distillation has donated the only bottle for the auction.
Islay distillation was closed in the 1980s, one of the many accident victims who destroyed the Scotch whiskey industry with as many as a quarter of the country’s distillation driven out of the business.
However, in a few decades after closing, Port Ellen received a reputation as one of the legendary ‘legendary ghost distillation “the remaining bottles sold at a fairly large price in the secondary market.
Diageo announced his plan to revive Port Ellen in 2017, and the renovation work began in 2020. Following the multi-million pound multi-year renovation, reopened in 2024.
Most of the old distillation was destroyed after its closing in 1983, so as to revive it, the global drink giant redesigned the distillation from the bottom up, including Phoenix Stills, was created again as a definite replica from the original Stills from 1983. Diageo also added two more experimental stills.
The new distillation has been built around the reputation of the Ellen and Islay ports for the iconic single malt and its iconic smoke fluid.
Earlier this year, launching Port Ellen Prism, called ‘new chapter in the journey of distillation experiments,’ using refining smoke atlas and ten safe parts.
Ellen’s 200 Port Year
The rebirth of Port Ellen came right before celebrating its 1200th anniversary.
In 2025, it will be 200 years since Port Ellen was founded on the South Coast of ISLAY in 1825 by Alexander Kerr Mackay and immediately after being developed into a significant reflection under John Ramsay.
To celebrate this milestone, Port Ellen will contribute to Port Ellen Prism to the squinting one of one auction.
It was distilled in 1978 and was bottled at the age of 46, this single expression was mature for almost five decades and was presented in a 1.5 liter decanter that was ordered earlier, wrapped in a stunning glass sculpture by famous artists Wilfried Grootens.
The result is a distinctive and unique expression of the Ellen port. Port Ellen Master Blender Aimée Morrison described its profile as “the layer of Kau-Semas from raisins, berries, and a mixture of chocolate with smoke from the nucleus, combined with a little spice, toffee cinder, and the remaining sea breeze.”
This statue has been designed to create a visual representation of the depth of the layered character from this very rare single malt.
It is expected to take between £ 150,000 and £ 300,000 at the auction on October 10 at Hopetoun House, Scotland.
The results of this auction are used to give charity, with money collected into youth action funds, to support disadvantaged young people in Scotland.
