New London rooftop bar and restaurant Solaya has opened on the roof of the Art’otel Hoxton

There are billions of new restaurants opening in the capital every year, but it’s rare to get a new rooftop. Many places claim to be a new rooftop venue, but in reality they are lying: the terrace on the first floor is not a new rooftop, no matter how much they try to promote it as a rooftop. I’ll come out and say it: the new ‘rooftop’ venue has to be at least eight stories high, or it’s just an elevated dining room. Enough with fake roofs everywhere.

Anyway, on to the Art’otel in Hoxton on Old Street, where there’s a wonderfully atmospheric new restaurant on floor 25. There’s a £10 Sunset Hour cocktail to enjoy in a plush lounge area that doesn’t feel so pretentious that it’s too much, and a lively restaurant occupies the second half of the top floor of the hotel.

The menu is from Kenny Atkinson who has two Michelin stars for his restaurant in Newcastle. Solaya focuses on Mediterranean cuisine, combining delicious, thoughtful food with some special new sights across the capital, to the east and as far away as Wembley and Southbank.

We started with an excellent tuna and steak tartare, and tender scallop slices bathed in tomato, lemon juice and basil before a superb cote de boeuf that was marbled and tender, and a family-style lamb parmentier, paired with something punchy from the sommelier.

The dark chocolate terrine could have been more chocolatey, but the apple tarte was delicious and beautifully handmade. A new rooftop spot that is finally really interesting and worth a visit.
