Gilabola.com – FOURTH CUP brings back a bittersweet story for Manchester United. Danny Welbeck became the main actor when Brighton & Hove Albion eliminated the hosts with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford, while advancing to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Brighton appeared effective from the start of the match. Brajan Gruda opened the scoring for the visitors in the 11th minute before Welbeck, named as captain, doubled the score in the second half. Manchester United had time to reduce the deficit through Benjamin Sesko, but had to end the match with ten men after Shea Lacey was sent off.
Brighton Rises After Being Pressured
Fabian Hurzeler made six changes to the lineup, including giving Jason Steele a starting start. The Brighton goalkeeper immediately worked hard in the early minutes by making two important saves, one each from Diego Dalot and Bruno Fernandes’ long-range shot which changed direction after hitting Sesko.
Brighton was able to reduce the initial pressure and actually scored first. The attack started from Jack Hinshelwood’s long cross which found Ferdi Kadioglu free on the left side. Kadioglu saw Welbeck’s movement and the striker sent a chip to the far post. Georginio’s header was thrown away by Lisandro Martinez, but the ball fell to Gruda’s feet, who fired a right-footed shot from about eight meters into the roof of the goal.
Brighton had another golden opportunity three minutes later. Welbeck intercepted Senne Lammens’ pass, but the United goalkeeper was able to parry his shot. Georginio tried to grab the wild ball, but was already in an offside position.
Welbeck Determines, United Are Running Out of Energy
As tensions increased at Old Trafford, Brighton’s confidence grew. Joel Veltman fired a long-range shot which was only slightly off the mark, while Welbeck threatened with a shot into the side of the net. Manchester United also had opportunities through Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha, but at halftime Brighton deserved to take the lead.
Brighton’s dominance continued at the start of the second half. Veltman had another chance from Gruda’s dead ball situation, although his shot went high. This pressure finally resulted in a second goal in the 64th minute. Gruda sent a low pass which Welbeck controlled with his right foot before finishing with a hard left-footed shot from about 15 meters into the roof of the goal. This goal was Welbeck’s eighth goal against Manchester United and his ninth this season.
Manchester United opened up hope when Sesko headed in Fernandes’ corner at the far post. However, the situation became more difficult after Shea Lacey, who came on as a substitute, received a second yellow card and had to leave the field. Brighton showed composure right up to the final whistle, while their fans celebrated a precious win at Old Trafford.
Gilabola.com Opinion
Brighton’s victory was not just about Welbeck’s goal, but rather a reflection of the team’s maturity in managing pressure in a stadium the size of Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Manchester United are again faced with the harsh reality that crucial moments are often their weak point, especially when facing players who know this club very well.
