Gilabola.com -Darwin Nunez finally officially left Liverpool to join the Saudi Arabian giant club, Al-Hilal, in a transfer agreement of around Rp 1 trillion.
The Uruguayan striker signed a three -year contract. His departure ended the three seasons at Anfield, where he recorded 40 goals in 143 appearances and won the Premier League title and Carabao Cup.
Nunez joined Liverpool in the 2022 summer transfer market after being recruited from Benfica by Jurgen Klopp at an initial cost of Rp 1.4 trillion.
He immediately scored in his competitive debut match, helping Communists Lift the FA Community Shield trophy after defeating Manchester City. In his first season, he collected 15 goals in 42 matches in all competitions and had won the Player of the Month Club.
Career journey in Liverpool and decreased role
The second season runs more productively, with 18 goals including two goals determined by a dramatic victory over Newcastle United. However, under the new manager Arne Slot last season, his role began to decrease.
The 26 -year -old striker only appeared as a starter in eight Premier League matches and scored seven goals in 47 matches in all competitions.
Liverpool itself has begun to rejuvenate the front lines. They brought Hugo Ekitite and Florian Wirtz, and reportedly targeted Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
This situation made Nunez’s position increasingly pressed, so the decision to accept the offer from Al-Hilal became a way out for him to save his career.
Al-Hilal and Saudi League ambitions
Al-Hilal, a club with 19 Saudi Arabian pro-League titles and four Asian Champions League trophies, is aggressively building power in world football.
After releasing Neymar in January, they were looking for a new star figure for the front lines. Before recruiting Nunez, they were linked to Bruno Fernandes and Victor Osimhen.
Besides Nunez, Al-Hilal’s squad is currently strengthened by a number of big names such as Kalidou Kouulibaly, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Joao Cancelo, and Aleksandar Mitrovic. The club is also trained by Simone Inzaghi, a coach who has twice reached the Champions League final.
Nunez’s move added to the list of top players who chose to leave large European leagues for the challenges in the Saudi Pro League. Since Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in 2022, a series of names like Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, and Riyad Mahrez also followed in a similar footsteps.
With its status as one of the most successful clubs in Asia, Al-Hilal hopes that Nunez can be a sharp spearhead that can bring them to win the domestic title and penetrate the peak of international football.
Meanwhile, Liverpool now have large funds to develop the next transfer strategy, although their main target, Isak, reportedly will not be released Newcastle in the near future.
