Keir Starmer has experienced a major blow to his authority after the members of the Labor Party parliament forced him to effectively leave his flagship welfare reform proposal after a chaotic scene at the House of Commons.
Only 90 minutes before the voting, and a few hours of heated debate, the government announced that they pulled the main size of the bill and left a key change in the controversial personal independence payment regime (PIP) to the review of the entire system.
U-Turn means that the Bill is approved in the voting of 335 to 260-now will not provide cost savings, making Rachel Reeves’ Chancellor with billions of pounds to be found in cutting expenses or tax increases. Labor MP Paula Barker attacks the decision of “Not Coheren and SHAMGICIC”, SLAMING “The at least dedicated spectacle I have ever seen.”
‘Capitulation’
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch condemned the “total capitulation” of the workers and stamped the “total time -wasting Bill.” His colleague Tom Tugendhat said: “This government has died and left us with the bill.”
Previously, the plan was to make it difficult for people to access the benefits of disease and disability, which was designed to save £ 5 billion, abandoned after an organized rebellion by members of the labor parliament.
The decision to cancel the welfare reform agenda – something that is described by Stararmer as an absolutely necessary thing – raises a serious question about the Chancellor’s fiscal head space and approach to public finances.
