Gilabola.com – Sir Jim Ratcliffe finally opened his voice about the managerial situation at Old Trafford and emphasized his full support for Manchester United coach, Ruben Amorim, even though the club is going through a difficult period.
United’s minority owner confirmed that Amorim would be given three years to prove his quality and resisted pressure to make instant changes.
Amorim, who will be managing United for a year on November 1, is facing a less than ideal start to the season. Last season, his team only finished 15th in the Premier League standings, the club’s worst result since 1974, and were eliminated early from the Carabao Cup after losing to League Two team Grimsby Town.
Ratcliffe conveyed his views through The Business Podcast produced by Time And Sunday Time. He considered the Portuguese coach to be a good figure and worthy of the opportunity to build a team in his own time.
Ratcliffe believes the media’s pressure for instant results is unrealistic. He emphasized that rebuilding a club as big as Manchester United cannot be done with an emotional approach or a knee-jerk reaction to weekly criticism from the media.
According to him, the public often thinks that success can come with just one quick decision, even though a club like United needs stability and a long-term vision. Ratcliffe rejected the idea of taking hasty decisions that could disrupt the team’s restructuring process.
The British businessman has owned almost 30 percent of United’s shares through his chemical company, INEOS, since February 2024. He also has full control over the club’s football operations, although the Glazer family is still the majority owner.
When asked about the possibility of Glazer requesting Amorim’s dismissal, Ratcliffe confirmed that would not happen. He explained that the Glazer family completely entrusts football matters to him and will not interfere in managerial decisions.
Ratcliffe also said that Glazer was often misunderstood by the public. According to him, the American owner family actually has great concern for the club, but geographical distance means their involvement is limited.
Focus on Club Sustainability and Efficiency
Since taking over, Ratcliffe has taken a number of efficiency steps at Manchester United. These steps include cutting around 450 employees and eliminating free lunch facilities for staff in order to reduce the club’s operational costs.
He explained that the policy was implemented because the club’s cost structure was considered too high and full of inefficient elements. Ratcliffe stressed that the decision was simply to put United in a healthy and sustainable financial position.
Ratcliffe emphasized that no big club can be successful without a strong financial foundation. According to him, the relationship between profits and performance on the field is very close, because sufficient funds will enable the building of a competitive squad.
He also revealed that although the results of the restructuring have not yet been seen in the latest financial report, he is optimistic that Manchester United will become the most profitable football club in the world in the next few years.
Last season, United recorded a record revenue of IDR 14.8 trillion, but still suffered a loss of IDR 733 billion because they did not participate in the Champions League. Ratcliffe believes the numbers will improve over time.
He closed the conversation by expressing his belief that the foundations being laid now will bring Manchester United back to the highest level of world football in a sustainable and stable manner.
