The fastest man in the UK, Zharnel Hughes wants the Grand Slam Track back next year with a date in Europe despite financial difficulties that force Michael Johnson to cut his first season.
Hughes said “was sucked up” that the four Grand Slam tracks were awarded places in the US and the Caribbean, given the tastes of watching athletics directly on the Atlantic side.
But he hopes that the innovative series and field series will overcome the cash crisis, and reduce concerns about payments that remain in circulation almost two months after the last meeting.
“My agent has been in contact with them. This is not like I learned what happened to my payment, but I know I have not received funds,” said Hughes.
“I think he mentioned that the appearance of performances did come, but the real race money had not yet come – so that’s what happened.
“It’s almost like the regular season where you run some Diamond League races, you run other races and you are paid at the end of this season.
“I just want to see if you are paid in August, September, our time is usually paid. Hopefully, it will be in the account at that time.
“I think many athletes participate in it really enjoyed it. Now payments have been postponed and they fail because they do not have the last grand slam, people may be a little more doubtful. We will see how it will be continued next season.”
Hughes excited by London 2029 Bid Backing
The Grand Slam Track Gigi problem also includes poor ticket sales. Asked whether the series that was supported by billionaires had to meet the stage in England and Europe, he said: “Well, that has nothing to do with Zharnel Hughes-that is related to their marketing team.
“Maybe if they leave again next season, they can get some races here in Europe. You don’t need to worry about filling the stadium, for sure.”
Hughes, 30, took the third in 100m men in front of the crowded London Stadium on Saturday and welcomed the government’s support for the capital offer for the 2029 World Championship.
“I was quite happy when I heard that they agreed to undergo an offer. I thought it was interesting,” said European champions twice.
“I have talked to my close friend, Matt Hudson-Smith, about how interesting it is, because we will grow old at that time. So I am glad they will take it and I hope to compete here in London.
“Always an interesting race at the London Stadium. Saturday shows that it can be filled in one day, so just imagine if another world championship will come again.
“This will be fun for young fans to be seen, especially the youngest students I saw on Saturday. The inspiration they got from inside the stadium to see us athletes up close and personal and reach us, is always fun. I am waiting for the world championship held here in 2029.”
